On April 11, 1970 the Apollo 13(piloted by A. Lovell Jr., John L. Swigert Jr., and Fred Wallace Haise Jr.) was launched into space on a trip to the moon. Two days after launch, while Apollo 13 was approaching the moon to begin lunar operations, something exploded on the ship that caused the service module of the CSM(control systems module) to lose its oxygen, electrical power, and other systems, including its ability to achieve an abort maneuver for a direct return to earth.
